I was recently wondering about USA county names. Things like which names are common, which are least common, which states have the most shared county names, etc.

So I began the investigation by first creating a table of the most common county names with their states.

Then I took that data and built it into a few interactive maps. First showing the states and county locations for each of those common names:

Then allowing you to click on any county to see the duplicates, if any:

There are also maps focusing on counties with only two name instances (“sister counties”), the largest/smallest counties, and which cities have the same name as the counties that contain them. See all the maps and visualizations in the blog post here.

If you’re a user of the Joplin note taking software, I recently created a very simple plugin to add a button that adds bullets to every line in your note. This is a super niche use case but if you need it here it is.
